PROFICIENCY SECTION
PART II - VOCABULARY
There are two types of vocabulary items in this test. In the first type,
you are given a sentence followed by four choices. You are to choose the
word (or words) that is closes in meaning to the underlined word (or words)
in the sentence and that could be used in the sentence without changing its
meaning greatly.
EXAMPLE A
The disadvantage of winning is the notoriety one receives.
(A) pleasure of
(B) thrill of
(C) difficulty of
(D) inconvenience of
The phrase "inconvenience of" means about the same thing as "disadvantage
of" in this sentence. The sentence, "The disadvantage of winning is the
notoriety one receives," means the same as, " The inconvenience of winning
is the notoriety one receives." Therefore, you should mark letter (D) on
your answer sheet.
In the other vocabulary item, you are given a sentence with one word omitted
and a list of four words. You are to find the word that best completes the
sentence.
EXAMPLE B
When his mother-in-law visits for longer than one day, John tends
to become somewhat cold and __________ towards her.
(A) evident
(B) impersonal
(C) periodical
(D) methodical
The word "impersonal" best fits the sentence so that it reads, "When his
mother-in-law visits for longer than one day, John tends to become somewhat
cold and impersonal towards her." Therefore, you have to mark letter (B) on
your answer sheet.
